Anatomy and Physiology for Speech, Language, and Hearing Review

Anatomy and Physiology for Speech, Language, and Hearing
Average Reviews:

This book offers a broad coverage of the underlying structures and processes of speech. Beyond a primitive stage, man is unique in his ability to convey information by using his voice. And he has developed this ability from systems designed for more vital goals (eg., respiration and nutrition). In this respect, the work by Seikel, King and Drumright proves a great resource for studying the entire apparatus involved in voice production and perception, specifically the systems of respiration (energy source), phonation (voicing), articulation and resonation filtering), mastication and deglution, hearing, and neural. Furthermore, it includes several appendices for quick access to anatomical terms, morphology of terms, muscles, sensors and nerves, and a review of pathologies affecting production of voice. What I liked the most about the book is that you are systematically guided through all the germane systems, and when pertinent, the book provides references for deeper understanding of the material. Besides, after you have read sufficient content, the book shows summaries for reinforcement of the learnt concepts. Also, there are clinical notes distributed throughout the text, with germane discussions (related processes, pathologies, etc.). And every chapter has a set of questions for assessment of your understanding (do not worry, answers are included!).
If you are concretelly focused on speech production, this book is a gold mine. They review the Source-Filter theory of speech production, and you can somewhat independently approach the excitation source and the filter ("shaping" of the source signal in the supraglottal airways). There is also an interesting discussion of the Central Control Theory and the Action Theory Model for coordinated articulation. Naturally, you will be presented a detailed list of muscles, and the qualitative effects of their contraction. Additionally, the CD-ROM includes the Anatesse software, useful for additional review of the subjects, and for self evaluation too! And finally, this is not your typical, dry textbook. On the contrary, it's a completely friendly, fun and professional intellectual product. Fully recommended.

Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation Review

Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation
Average Reviews:

Tye-Murray has bettered her first effort with this second edition of "Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation: Children, Adults, and Their Family Members." I used the first edition for my introduction to AR class for years, and find this one even more useful. The prose is interesting and clear, the graphics are very useful for teaching purposes. This is a text that I tell my students to hang on to and not re-sale to the bookstore. Once they graduate, they will return to it over and over again.

Amazon lists this text book incorrectly. It is listed as the 2008 version, which doesn't exist. However, when you preview the copywrite page, it is the correct, 2009 3rd edition. Amazon just has some updating to do.

Language Learning in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Multiple Pathways Review

Language Learning in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Multiple Pathways

Easterbrooks encourages us to radiate our conception of literacy from deaf children into the sphere of ALL children, but she fails to offer clear historical precedence.
Please read this book critically with other resources (CHILD'S TALK and CHILDREN'S MINDS).

Language Learning in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing looks at the acquisition of language by children with hearing losses and proposes multiple pathways by which students can acquire a practical system of communication. Recent advances in the education of students who are deaf and hard of hearing have brought new insights into imparting the ability to communicate to this population. This book addresses the language development process from multiple perspectives, drawing on the latest research in bilingual-biculturalism, cochlear implant technology and neuroscience. The text presents a unique view of language development, proposing that there are multiple pathways to the acquisition of a system of communication and providing a departure from traditional proprietary perspectives. This text begins with a historical overview of language development in students who are deaf and hard of hearing and follows with a review of current literature on the subject. The multiple pathways perspective is described, introducing real students with hearing losses as points of departure for application. These same students provide examples for the chapters on assessment and instruction. The book ends with an in-depth meta-linguistic overview of the two languages which teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing must master: English and American Sign Language.

Educating Deaf Students: From Research to Practice Review

Educating Deaf Students: From Research to Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
...Readers will not have a problem with this book. Since I've had to go get several papers used in this book at a variety of libraries, I have not yet found one problem.
Even more important is the quality of information provided in this book that is critical to educators and parents of deaf children. As a deaf person and a deaf student, I wish that my parents had had this type of help available to them back in the 60's and 70's, when I was attending public school. I know they were deeply frustrated with the total lack of information concerning how to participate in my education, and why I 'learned' some things easily and well, but had problems with other things. It would be criminal for parents of deaf children today (especially hearing parents with no prior introduction to deafness), not to use this book to increase their knowledge about how their children can best be helped to learn.
The three men who wrote this book are all uniquely qualified to provide this critical information. Marschark is the prevailing voice of wisdom in educating deaf learners. His previous books have delved into the psychological and educational needs and abilities of deaf learners, and he provides fair and concise information about what is known from all fields (such as MRI studies of the brain activity in deaf learners, as well as types of communication strategies that will or will not work). Dr. Harry Lang is not only a physicist and a deaf educator, but a deaf person himself who having been through the system knows not only what it is like, but also what really needs to be done. He also provides a lot of input into the teaching of difficult subjects such as science and math. Dr. John Albertini is a professor of English whose research into intertwining of English skills into other subjects (science for example) has helped educators to use and promote English literacy throughout the entire educational experience of deaf learners. This provides a bootstrap to deaf learners to achieve literacy in other subjects... There is still a great deal of controversy concerning educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students, concerning language and the abilities of these students to learn. ...
Lest I give readers the idea that this book is written in an inaccessible manner, I want to assure them that this is not so. While it is true that writing for research journals is very different and often inaccessible to the lay person, these three authors go out of their way to make this book as easily understandable as possible. The book is research-based, not research writing. This book is an essential text for educators and librarians to buy, and it is an essential text for parents and for deaf learners themselves to read in order to help themselves...

Over the past decade there has been a significant increase in interest from educators and the general public about deafness, special education, and the development of children with special needs. The education of deaf children in the United States has been seen as a remarkable success story around the world, even while it continues to engender domestic debate. In Educating Deaf Students: From Research to Practice, Marc Marschark, Harry G. Lang, and John A. Albertini set aside the politics, rhetoric, and confusion that often accompany discussions of deaf education. Instead they offer an accessible evaluation of the research literature on the needs and strengths of deaf children and on the methods that have been used-successfully and unsuccessfully-to teach both deaf and hearing children. The authors lay out the common assumptions that have driven deaf education for many years, revealing some of them to be based on questionable methods, conclusions, or interpretations, while others have been lost in the cacophony of alternative educational philosophies. They accompany their historical consideration of how this came to pass with an evaluation of the legal and social conditions surrounding deaf education today. By evaluating what we know, what we do not know, and what we thought we knew about learning among deaf children, the authors provide parents, teachers, and administrators valuable new insights into educating deaf students and others with special needs.

I've used this book for two Speech Pathology courses, Acoustic Phonetics and Anatomy and Physiology. My teacher literally teaches in complete order of these chapters so I found this book to be very helpful. It goes step by step and does a decent job of explaining all the things associated with the body and speech, language and hearing. There are also very good glossaries as well as practice tests for each section. They are challenging but really help you to get to know your stuff. I am definintely keeping this book for my future SpeechPath days.

For any Speech Pathology grad students reading this, get this book! Yeah, it's a bit old (as evidenced by the "diskette" it comes with), but the anatomy and physiology are the same. It's very clear and easy to understand. The diagrams are an extra bonus, as is the VCR tape (again, a bit dated), but I can't say enough. I will be keeping this book as a reference tool for years to come!
If any of your speech courses require you to learn anatomy & physiology, buy it. You won't be sorry :-D

This study guide is uniquely designed to complement current introductory textbooks and online courses in speech and hearing anatomy and physiology. Whether taught face-to-face or online, anatomy and physiology courses and their accompanying texts are dense in content. This workbook answers the need for a practical book, being neither unnecessarily complex nor academic, for undergraduate training in speech-language pathology. It is designed to allow students to work at their own pace, to learn how to organize, how to bring together, and how to functionally apply the content learned in their coursework. The Study Guide is organized into seven units. The first unit contains a comprehensive synopsis of anatomy and physiology, including content such as locator terms, planes of reference, and anatomical position, enabling students to learn the vocabulary needed to study anatomy and physiology. The second unit takes a brief look at the basics of cells and tissues to form a foundation for study of larger structures. The remainder of the workbook organizes speech and hearing anatomy into the functional categories of respiration, phonation, articulation, as well as the nervous and auditory systems. Each unit provides an extremely well-written, practical summary of the particular speech and hearing system, followed by learning objectives, specific questions students can answer in outline format, and finally, a self-test. This all-new Study Guide clarifies and simplifies a complex element of the introductory course and provides an ideal complementary learning and self-testing tool for students. This book is a good and comprehensive guide to rehabilitation. However, it is boring and the layout is very unappealing. I am the type of person who considers a lot of the book content to be common sense and I lose interest when reading it. But nothing in the book is wrong or unnecessary, it is just not appealing to the way my mind works. I used it in my courses and it is sitting on my shelf, however, I have not used it since I took the related courses.

Practical Aural Habilitation: For Speech-Language Pathologists of Hearing-Impaired Children Review

Practical Aural Habilitation: For Speech-Language Pathologists of Hearing-Impaired Children
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a speech-language pathology student. I discovered this book while preparing a presentation on the topic of auditory stimuli in aural rehabilitation. I would highly recommend it to anyone who works with hearing-impaired children, and it is especially good for students and clinicians who work in the schools. It clearly explains how to interpet an audiogram and use it for planning therapy. Best of all, there are many case studies of how the information can be applied to specific children. It includes many therapy tasks and ideas for incorporating auditory-verbal exercises into whole language therapy.Though not apparent from the title, it is directed toward the auditory-verbal school of thought, so would not be appropriate for therapy using manual language approaches. It would also be a good resource for parents of hearing-impaired infants for activities that they could do at home, and for better understanding of their child's impairment. It is well-organized and easy to read. I highly recommend this book.
