I've returned this product for evaluation. The display (an LCD) has 5 contrast settings with 4 being about the best on this particular phone. If the contrast is increased to 5 then underlying blocks used to make all numbers 0-9 become visable, resembling a row of 8s. In a well lit room the display doesn't offer adequate contrast for the elderly friend I purchased it for. I have good vision (with glasses on) and had to position the screen directly in front of my eyes and completely perpendicular or 3s and 8s were not well differentiated. This is rather disappointing when you consider the consumer target groups of the elderly and those with disabilities. The other disappointing issue with the phone is the speed dial numbers. One has to hit a toggle button changing the function of the caller ID button to phonebook, then move up to the scroll buttons. Not the greatest planning for those with poor vision and/or poor memories.
As the the essential functions of the phone - voice enhancement and emergency pendant I found little to complain about. My friend could hear me more clearly than a standard phone so I didn't have to shout. And the pendent did dial the emergency number programmed (911) and played an emergency message as promised. I did not set up the phone to dial a sequence of numbers until someone answered so I can't comment on this function. My final complaint is minor, but should be a consideration for all personal alert pendant makers. A cover that slides easily over the pendant's emergency button would be a much appreciated feature My friend once activated his personal alert system in his sleep and refused to where the pendant after that incident. Makes the pendant rather worthless if it's on a table 20 feet away if he has a heart attack in the bathroom. Again, televoice should consider the consumer target groups and correct these issues. It seems it would be rather easy to do and would create a product that family members would have confidence in during an emergency.
