Writing Deafness: The Hearing Line in Nineteenth-Century American Literature Review

Writing Deafness: The Hearing Line in Nineteenth-Century American Literature
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an original and provocative book. Addressing W. E. B. DuBois's concept of "the color line" in the 20th century, Krentz argues that 19th century American literature grappled with a "hearing line," i.e. a contested boundary between hearingness (the author's coinage) and deafness. He examines how this hearing line appears in work by deaf authors and also in the canonical authors of the century. The readings of Melville, Twain, Cooper, and others open new perspectives on their works that should be of interest to anyone concerned with the construction of American identity. The deaf authors included are contextualized in their literary and social locations as they articulate a deaf "I" or "we."
Throughout the work, Krentz engages current literary theory on gender, race, class, and colonialism. Deaf American culture intersects with these theories, but also presents challenges to them. The similarities and differences between deaf experience(s) and those of other oppressed groups deserve serious thought by anyone interested in the dynamics of self-definition for oppressed groups. Krentz emphasizes the positive sense of deaf identity and community that emerged in the 19th century, as authors responded to the complexities of American identity at that time.

Taking an original approach to American literature, Christopher Krentz examines 19th-century writing from a new angle: that of deafness, which he shows to have surprising importance in identity formation. He demonstrates that deaf and hearing authors used writing to explore their similarities and differences, trying to work out the invisible boundary, analogous to Du Bois's color line, that Krentz calls the "hearing line." Discusses authors including James Fenimore Cooper, Lydia Huntley Sigourney, Herman Melville, and Mark Twain.

I ordered these ear plugs for my father who has recently moved into an assisted living facility.
He has become a light sleeper and the noise was driving him crazy. In the past he has used wax earplugs and wanted more. I went online and found these. They are exactly what he was looking for.
Ordering was easy, delivery was super fast and communication with distributor was excellent. My father found them easy to form to his ear and easy to get out. Thank you for an excellent product with exceptional service.

Hearing Equals Behavior Review

Hearing Equals Behavior
Average Reviews:

This book proposes that even very minute distortions and irregularities in a person's hearing can affect how he acts. It offers what seems to be an effective treatment for dyslexia, depression, autism, hyperacusis, tinnitus, and even stuttering using altered sounds to retrain the hearing. It clearly & simply describes the scientific functions of the hearing process along with the disorders and the actual treatment. Guy Berard comes across as a thorough researcher and a compassionate doctor. It claims a 93 percent cure rate for depression within a 10 day course of treatment, I'd say that's impressive.

Hearing Without Ears Review

Hearing Without Ears
Average Reviews:

Linda Knapp's account of her bout with bacterial meningitis, including her total loss of hearing, is a powerfully emotional narrative. She focuses on her way back from near death to her role as wife and mother and her writing career, with the help of numerous professionals in the healthcare system and especially with cochlear implants, which gave her back her hearing. It is a remarkable story.
For me, however, what is even more remarkable is her ability to communicate it. She is a very capable writer whose earlier professional achievements included both novels and a weekly column in the Seattle Times on computer technologies. With these very different writing skills she has been able to integrate a cogent and well-documented description of the new technologies (including cochlear implants) which helped her recovery, into the chronological description of the personal experience as it affected herself and her family.
Recounting how, from her perspective, her family (including a teenage daughter) reacted to the ordeal and to her, she has taken a risk in sharing openly and honestly so many details of their personal interactions. But in so doing she has enriched the narrative and made it much more valuable to her readers.
Both the information on the modern medical technologies and her fascinating personal story will be extraordinarily helpful to anyone else who has suffered, as an adult, the tragedy of a killer disease and hearing loss.

This story covers the author's journey from the time she fell into a coma and woke up totally deaf, through her surgery to get an "electronic ear" (more correctly called a cochlear implant) and the ongoing effort to learn how to use it to hear again. There are many problems with substitute hearing, but they do fade--like background noise--to a place of lesser importance. Electronic hearing may not be perfect, but it's a whole lot better than no hearing at all.

Anatomy for Speech and Hearing Review

Anatomy for Speech and Hearing

The information is there, but this is more a text book to teach the names and location of anatomy than a reference book for an experienced clinician. The illustrations are pencil and not very detailed. To look up specific anatomical items requires going to several pages. Not a quick reference work.

Pass It on: Telling and Hearing Stories from John (A Kaleidoscope Series Resource)

From a master biblical storyteller/preacher/theologian/NT scholar -- a book for non-experts that shows how the stories from John's gospel can profitably be told and heard. Deals with 6 stories from John: 1) the Samaritan woman, 2) the man born blind, 3) Mary and Martha, 4) Pilate, 5) Mary Magdalene, 6) Peter and forgiveness. Narrative analysis for laypeople!! Great stuff.
